Digipak Analysis
Sam Smith- In The Lonely Hour
Sam Smith's debut album displays a simple concept that defines his music to his audience. The artwork uses flash photography so that Smith's face is clearly exposed, giving a fresh and candid vibe. This is contrasted with the darker colours in the artwork- his clothes as well as the backdrop aren't bright or colourful, which suggests that the genre of his music is for a more a more mature audience. This is also paired with Smith's expression and pose, he is looking down and making what looks like a praying gesture- this highlights the seriousness and maturity of the album.
Lorde- Pure Heroine
Unlike most young female pop singers, Lorde sets herself and her music apart by appealing to a more edgy audience. Like her music, this album artwork gives a sense of maturity and darkness. The artist and album name is clearly shown in white contrasting to the pitch black background. This oozes boldness and confidence, which is a good reflection of Lorde's image.
Bon Iver- For Emma, Forever Ago
The dull and dark colours in the album plays into the sense of longing and sadness. The focal point is, however, the foggy window covering more than half of the artwork- this may be a reflection of how unclear future or relationship (as the songs in this album are mostly about regret). The artist name and album name are featured on the top of the album, but may not be noticeable at first glance as the text used is small and difficult to read. This shows that the artist did not wish for a obnoxious album, but opted for a more subtle and understated look.
