Evaluation: Question 1

How are social groups or issues represented?

-Women-

The music video takes the audience through the emotional progression of the artist. Her character is presented as a commanding and independent woman, however, as the music video progresses, she goes through a variety of emotions- showcasing a more sensitive and sentimental side, creating a more realistic and complicated character. This portrays women as more complex and dimensional, as opposed to being sexualised and objectified to the 'male gaze' like how many are portrayed in the entertainment industry.

-Love and Loss-

The lyrics to this track works as a plea to a love interest in hopes that they'll respect her and reconsider giving the relationship a second shot. Both the lyrics and visuals depicts the fall out of a relationship, and the difficulties in coming into terms with a lost love. Although it illustrates the ending of a relationship, our music video emphasises on the individuality of the artist- therefore the story is quite one-sided as the love interest only appears in a few scenes. Furthermore, there is no backstory or reason for the breakup, therefore drawing more of an importance on the emotional journey one goes through after a heartbreak.

-Feminism-

Aside from being a plea to the lover, the lyrics also serves as a confident showcase of a woman’s courage to speak her mind in pursuit of her goals. The artist is not coy in conveying her wants to her love interest- thus creating an image of a confident and unapologetic woman. The artist is not sexualised or objectified to gain male interest, but presented as a complex and 'normal' individual. The character the artist portrays in the music video is also consistent with her brand image- a modern feminist woman.
